Falcons win opener of San Mateo tournament; finish 1-2

Despite winning the first game of the Tom Martinez Invitational at College of San Mateo, the Solano women’s basketball team dropped its final two games to go 1-2 at the tournament before the Christmas break.

By tournament’s end, the Falcons had played seven games in 10 days and deserved a bit of a break before tipping off the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic at De Anza Dec. 28-30.

Solano won the opener against Santa Monica, 81-67. Christen Voyles led a balanced attack for the Falcons with 21 points and 12 rebounds. She added five assists, two steals and a blocked shot in what Coach Matt Borchert called her best game of the season.

Merritt, Napa drop programs; SCC adds tournament to schedule

Due to change in the Bay Valley Conference schedule, the Solano women’s basketball team added a tournament to the schedule at the last minute.

Merritt College and Napa Valley College dropped their women’s basketball programs for the remainder of the 2015-16 season, leaving Solano with four games to add to the schedule.

Solano coach Matt Borchert was able to replace two of those games by jumping into the College of San Mateo tournament this weekend. The Falcons open the event on Friday with Santa Monica at 5 p.m.


Jones on fire; Falcons go 1-2 at Solano Showdown

Cassandra Jones has already established herself as one of the top 3-point shooters in Solano women’s basketball history.

Cassandra Jones didn’t waste much time in establishing herself as one of the top 3-point shooters in Solano history.

The freshman guard tied the school record in back-to-back games against Feather River and Cosumnes River, connecting on seven 3-pointers in each game.

She joins an impressive trio of Marisa VonBromsen, Michelle Lewis and Denisha Lundy – three of the top 3-point shooters in Solano history – to hold the record for 3-pointers made in a game.

Cassandra’s efforts helped Solano go 1-2 at the Solano Showdown over the weekend, falling in the consolation championship game to DeAnza College. The game was the Falcons’ fourth in four days. Read the rest of this entry »


Solano nets big victory over Cabrillo

Alex Bader was glad to be back at home.

The sophomore guard, playing in her first game at Solano Gym, scored 23 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals to help the Solano women’s basketball team to a 72-51 win over Cabrillo in the Falcons’ home opener.

Alex shot 9 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 7 from the 3-point line to help the Falcons build an early lead that they never relinquished.

Fellow sophomore Miranda Holman scored 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while freshman Alivia Trzesniewski provided a huge spark off the bench, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Cassandra Jones added nine points and six rebounds for Solano.

Solano goes 1-2 at the COS Tournament

Solano earned its first victory of the season, but unfortunately it was sandwiched between two losses as the Falcons went 1-2 at the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at College of Sequoias this weekend.

The Falcons were looking to avenge an earlier season loss to Cerritos, but fell 75-37 on Thursday. Kyara Reed scored eight points off the bench while Miranda Holman added seven. Christen Voyles had a solid line – scoring just four points, but adding seven rebounds and two assists.

Solano bounced back with its first win of the season, 68-47 over Reedley. Cassandra Jones led three players in double figure scoring, finishing with 16 points including 4 of 6 from the 3-point line. She also had six rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Kyara Reed added 13 points and eight rebounds while Christen Voyles chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Solano was eliminated from the tournament after a 64-35 loss to Antelope Valley on Saturday afternoon.

AVC jumped out to a 21-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Solano had a hard time getting anything going offensively, but was led by Dyemond Mitchell’s seven points and three rebounds.

Next Up: Solano hosts Cabrillo College on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. ahead of the Solano Showdown which takes place Dec. 11-13.


Solano falls to Siskiyous on the road

The Solano women’s basketball team suffered a 104-62 defeat at the hands of Siskiyous in Weed on Nov. 24.

The Falcons fell behind early, trailing 34-14 after the first quarter and wasn’t able to recover. Siskiyous, always well-known as a great 3-point shooting team, didn’t disappoint, hitting 10-of-26 from beyond the arc.

Freshman Cassandra Jones had a solid shooting night, connecting on 5 of 8 from the 3-point line while finishing with 17 points. She added four assists. Marial Dinglasan had 12 points and three rebounds.

Mae Moore came off the bench and added seven points and five assists.

Next up: Solano travels to the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at College of Sequoias Dec. 3-6.
