The Solano women’s basketball team opened defense of its 2014 undefeated Bay Valley Conference title with a 72-37 win over Yuba College on Friday night.

The Falcons jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game before the 49ers finally got a score. Solano (8-5, 1-0) led 41-13 at the half and by as many as 35 in the second half. The coaching staff was able to rest their starters for most of the game.

Laura Lawson (13 points, 5 rebounds), Nikki Andaya (11 points, 3 assists) and Audrie Jones (10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) played a big part in Solano building the early lead. But it was the reserves, led by sophomore Kiara Beacham, who kept Yuba from getting back into the game in the second half.

Beacham, a forward, scored a career high 10 points and added six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Falcons. Talia Champion-Benjamin, a freshman forward, had a team-high seven rebounds.

Next: Solano plays three games next week. First on Tuesday is Los Medanos in Pittsburg; Thursday’s game is at Contra Costa in San Pablo. Both games are at 5:30 p.m. Next Saturday, Jan. 10, Solano hosts Napa Valley at 1 p.m.
