Denisha Lundy scored 27 points and Taylor Hamilton added 22 as the Solano Community College women’s basketball team overcame a tough Los Medanos squad to pull out an 87-69 victory in Pittsburg on Friday night.
Solano clinched a tie for the Bay Valley Conference title with three games left in the season. It’s the program’s 11th conference title and fifth in the last seven years.
Los Medanos wasn’t going to let Solano capture the crown without a fight. The Mustangs came out in a half-court press that seemed to throw off the Falcons. Solano had double-digit turnovers by halftime for the second game in a row.
Still, the Falcons managed to go into the locker room at halftime with a 41-34 lead.
Solano attacked the basket more aggressively in the second half to pull away and hold a 20-point lead throughout most of the final 20 minutes.
Lundy shot 11 of 18 from the floor while hitting 4 of 5 from the 3-point line. The sophomore guard also had three rebounds and three assists. Hamilton, also a sophomore guard, had eight assists and five steals. Freshman forward Laura Lawson chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.
Necole White had another stellar outing with 13 points off the bench. The sophomore has scored in double figures three of the team’s last four games. Nikki Andaya added eight points, three rebounds and five assists and a season-high seven steals.
Solano (22-4, 13-0) brings its 14-game win streak into Wednesday’s home game against College of Marin. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. Both teams will be supporting the Coaches vs. Cancer program. Coaches vs. Cancer leverages coaches to help raise awareness about cancer. All proceeds and donations from the game will go to the American Cancer Society.
