Freshman guard Nikki Andaya hit step-back three-pointer with 18.7 seconds left in the game to lift Solano to a 69-67 win over Cosumnes River in the Solano Showdown semifinals on Saturday night.
Solano will take on Chabot College in the championship game on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Saturday’s game was a back-and-forth battle with Cosumnes leading by as many as seven with less than 7 minutes to go in the contest. Solano was persistent though and took the ball hard to the basket on nearly every possession. It came down to the final three minutes of the game when Justice Robinson gave Solano a 61-60 lead on a pair of free throws. After a defensive stop, Taylor Hamilton drove to the basket and connected to put Solano up 63-60.
More back-and-forth play ensued and with Solano leading 66-63, Cosumnes banked in a 3-pointer from the wing with 1:13 to go. The teams traded empty possessions and with the shot and game clocks winding down Andaya took it upon herself. With some fancy footwork, she drilled a three to put the Falcons up 69-66.
Cosumnes set up their offense and eventually got the ball into their post player who was fouled while attempting a layup. She made the first free throw but missed the second shot intentionally. Neither team was able to come up with the loose ball rebound as time expired.
This is the first time Solano has advanced to the championship game of its own tournament since 2009 when the team beat Cosumnes River for the title.
