The Solano women’s basketball fought back after a tough opening-round loss to perennial powerhouse Ventura to advance to the consolation championship of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational.
The Falcons seemed to feel the effects of playing four games in four days though and dropped an 82-69 decision to LA Valley. Nikki Andaya, a freshman guard, scored 21 points and added five rebounds off the bench for Solano. Sophomore point guard Taylor Hamilton scored 17 points.
Solano (4-3) fought hard throughout the game but couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively, with shot after shot not falling – even those within two feet of the basket. The team made a late run at LA Valley but simply ran out of time.
The Falcons recorded back-to-back wins over Porterville and Sacramento City to get to the consolation championship. It was the first time since 2007 that a Solano team had advanced to the final day in each of its first two tournaments.
