Playing against one another for the second time in six days, the Solano and Sacramento City college women’s basketball team fought a tough battle on Friday night in the opening round of the Solano Showdown. The home team prevailed, however, winning 66-60.
Solano led by as many as 12 points late in the second half before Sacramento City tied the game 56-56 with less than five minutes remaining. The Falcons were cool down the stretch though, running through its offense, getting a couple of backdoor layups from freshman Nikki Andaya and Justice Robinson and then sealing the game with free throws in the final minutes.
It was only the second time since 2008 that Solano won the opening round game of its own tournament. The Falcons will take on undefeated Cosumnes River College on Saturday at 6 p.m. CRC defeated Shasta College in another quarterfinal earlier in the day.
