Falcons win fourth straight; win nailbiter over Marin

January 18, 2013

The Solano College women’s basketball team got a bit of a scare after leading 13 at the half but pulled out a 63-51 win over College of Marin in Bay Valley Conference action on Tuesday night.

The game was the only one of the week for the Falcons who won’t play again until a January 23 contest against Contra Costa.

Solano got one of its most balanced scoring efforts of the season as every player scored in helping the Falcons hit the .500 mark for the first time since November 29.

Ariel Clay and Taylor Hamilton each scored 13 points for the Falcons while Cheyenne Shepherd added 11 points. Taylor added five assists and five steals while Ariel grabbed 11 rebounds and three steals.

Stephanie Saelee chipped in eight points for her second straight solid effort off the bench for the Falcons. Necole White hit three 3-pointers and finished with nine points.

Solano (5-1 BVC, 8-8) led 38-25 at the half before College of Marin blasted out of the gates in the second half, eventually tying the game at 40 before going up 41-40. The Falcons answered right back with a huge run and pulled away over the remainder of the game to secure its fourth straight win.

Solano hands Mendocino first league loss of 2013

January 12, 2013

Taylor Hamilton scored 22 points for her second straight 20-point effort and third in the last four games to lead Solano to a 64-58 win over Mendocino on Thursday, handing the Eagles their first BVC loss of the season.

Ariel Clay added 11 points and 14 rebounds. The freshman forward has scored in double figures in six straight games. She’s recorded a double-double in three of the team’s last four games.

The game was a back-and-forth battle throughout with Mendocino taking a narrow 35-34 lead into halftime. The Eagles, who made five 3-pointers in the first half, struggled to even get a trey up in the second half as Solano built a 15-point lead, 62-47, late in the game.

Mendocino rallied in the final minutes to close the gap and make the game interesting, but Solano held on for the win, its third straight victory at home.

Cheyenne Shepherd added 10 points and six rebounds while Kristina Kountouris chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Lucy Santos came off the bench to score seven points.

Solano (6-8, 3-1) looks to extend its win streak when it takes on Los Medanos in Pittsburg on Saturday. The game time has been moved to 1 p.m.

Playing in just their third home game of the season, the Falcons jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never relented in building a 10-point halftime lead. Solid shooting from all 10 players kept the momentum going in the second half and Solano’s lead grew to 30, 78-48, late in the second half.

Freshman point guard Taylor Hamilton continued her impressive play, scoring a season-high 27 points. Fellow classmate Ariel Clay added 13 points. Lucy Santos added eight points and four more players finished with six each.

“We did some things differently than we had in our previous games and the team responded well,” said Coach Matt Borchert. “Our defense caused Yuba some problems and we had some people step up on offense tonight. We shot the ball confidently tonight so hopefully that continues.”

The Falcons take on defending BVC champions Laney College on Friday in Oakland at 6 p.m.
