The Solano women’s basketball team returned to the court on Thursday, opening play in the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic at De Anza College. The tournament has special meaning for Solano Coach Matt Borchert, who was an assistant coach under Gervasoni prior to coming to Solano. Gervasoni also served as Borchert’s best man in his wedding.
The Falcons got off to a quick start, but fell to City College of San Francisco 84-50. Taylor Hamilton led Solano with 18 points while Ariel Clay scored 16 points for the Falcons (3-6). Sophomore Cheyenne Shepherd added 10 points.
The loss comes on the heels of a tough home opener for the Falcons. Solano dropped both of its games in the Solano Showdown at the beginning of December – falling to Chabot and Sacramento City.
Solano led 23-14 before San Francisco exploded on a 26-4 run to takes a 40-27 lead into halftime. The Rams never looked back after that and cruised to the win with outstanding offensive sequences.
Solano looks to end a four-game losing skid Friday when it takes on Merced College at 2 p.m. in the consolation semifinals of the Gervasoni tournament.
