Freshman Taylor Hamilton was named all-tournament to lead the Solano College women’s basketball team to the consolation championship of the Santa Barbara MTXE Tournament.
The Falcons topped Grossmont on Saturday 71-60 behind nine points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals from Hamilton, the team’s freshman point guard.
“She was huge for us against Grossmont,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “Taylor didn’t play like a freshman this weekend.”
Ariel Clay scored 16 points against Grossmont and added nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Falcons, who recovered from an opening round 50-42 loss to Riverside to beat San Diego Mesa 59-50 in the consolation semifinals.
“We got a good introduction to college basketball on that first day,” said Coach Matt. “The game wasn’t pretty, we had a lot of turnovers and the girls were a little nervous. But they turned things around real quick.”
Solano (2-1) showed some heart against Grossmont, diving for loose balls, going hard to the basket and making strong plays on both ends of the floor.
Against Mesa, Hamilton scored 19 points and added three assists and six steals in a balanced scoring effort. In the Riverside game, Solano’s only returning sophomore Cheyenne Shepherd led the way with 13 points.
The Falcons take on Santa Barbara in the first round of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at College of Sequoias on Thursday.
