Solano jumps into tie for first place with big victory

Cheyenne Shepherd makes her way around a Los Medanos defender Wednesday night.

The Solano women’s basketball team recovered from a disappointing loss last Friday to post a 48-38 win over first-place Los Medanos on Wednesday.

With the win, the Faclons and Mustangs are now tied atop the Bay Valley Conference Valley Division with one loss apiece.

Ruby Leon led the offense with 13 points. The sophomore guard added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. She was the only Falcon to reach double-figure scoring.

Solano (12-9, 4-1) held Los Medanos to its lowest scoring total of the season while the 48 points was the Falcons’ lowest scoring output in a victory this year.

Tara Cooley finished with nine points, including four in the last two minutes of the game that sealed the victory. She also had two rebounds and four steals. Cheyenne Shepherd came off the bench to score seven points on 3 of 4 shooting. She also had four rebounds.

Shannon Rankin, who averages 13 points per game, was held to six points but had 10 rebounds.

For the second straight game, Solano struggled to find the bottom of the basket. But unlike in its loss to Mendocino on Friday, the Falcons were able to overcome a poor offensive showing by making up for it on defense. The Falcons shot just 28 percent from the field and 16 percent from the 3-point line. They turned the ball over just 12 times and recorded 14 steals.

The Falcons have a bye on Friday before traveling to Kentfield to take on College of Marin next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
