Solano advances to title game in Santa Barbara

Tara Cooley was named all-tournament at the Santa Barbara MTXE tournament.

The Solano women’s basketball team went 2-1, advancing to the championship game of the Santa Barbara MTXE Tournament last week. The Falcons fell to San Bernardino Valley College 78-57 in the title game.

Tara Cooley, a sophomore guard, was named all-tournament after averaging 13 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. In the championship game, Tara sparked a huge comeback after the Falcons fell behind 34-8. Solano cut the lead 41-34 as Tara ignited the team on both ends of the floor. But with just two minutes to go in the half, San Bernardino scored seven unanswered to take the momentum into halftime.

San Bernardino used its size and athleticism to keep Solano at bay in the second half.

Solano opened the tournament with a 68-61 win over Riverside before knocking off Grossmont 68-54 in the semifinals. The win over Grossmont was the first time in three meetings that Solano posted a win over the team from Carlsbad.

Shannon Rankin was outstanding for the Falcons (2-2) as well, averaging 12.3 points and five rebounds per game. Freshman Kandace Perez also made an impact in the paint for Solano.

“The trip was great,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “The team was tough and played so much more aggressive than in our game against Fresno. I was real proud of their effort. I know they will keep it going now because they believe this is the team they can be every time we step on the court.”

Solano returns to action against Skyline College on Tuesday Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. at home.
