The Solano College women’s basketball team dropped a 100-70 decision to Fresno City in the season opener for the Falcons on Saturday night.
The Falcons (0-1) were led by Shannon Rankin who had 18 points and nine rebounds. She also tied a program record by going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
“That’s exciting,” said the sophomore forward. “I never made all my free throws in a game before.”
Solano struggled with turnovers in the early going, and had 25 in the game, as Fresno’s press caused problems and often led to easy baskets for the Rams. Fresno led by as many as 23 in the first half. The Falcons pulled to within 13, 55-42, early in the second half but that was as close as they would get. Another Fresno run allowed them to pull away for good and seal its first victory of the season.
Tara Cooley went 8 for 12 from the field, adding 17 points for Solano while Presley Neufeld chipped in 10.
“This was a good test for our players,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “We will get back to practice this week and work on our weaknesses.”
Solano travels to Santa Barbara and opens the MTXE Tournament on Thursday against Riverside College at 1 p.m.
