The 2010-11 Solano Community College women’s basketball team gathered on May 1 to celebrate its fourth straight Bay Valley Conference championship, among other things at the end-of-the-season banquet.
The banquet was held in the lobby of the Solano Gym and was attended by family, friends and Solano athletic staff and faculty who remembered what a fantastic season the Falcons had.
Solano head coach Matt Borchert and his assistants, Natalie Cooley and Conni Holloway, presented each player with their championship t-shirt, season summary and highlight film – which was viewed by the group later in the evening.
As is tradition, the coaches awarded the Falcon Award to the student-athlete with the highest GPA. This year’s recipient was freshman Shannon Rankin. Coach Natalie is a two-time winner of the Falcon Award.
At the conclusion of the season, the players voted on the Player of the Year. It’s an award Coach Matt started years ago based on an idea from former De Anza College coach Mike Gervasoni. The award takes into consideration a variety of factors including an athlete’s on-court performance, academic standing, leadership, citizenship, coachability and inspiration.
The players named sophomore point guard Ivy Jones as player of the year for 2010-11. Ivy was humbled by the award and joined a long list of great players to receive the honor.
The coaching staff also bid farewell to their five sophomores who played such an important role in the program the last two years. Keep an eye on the blog to learn where the players will be signing their letters-of-intent to continue their athletic and academic careers.
