Solano women’s basketball coach Matt Borchert earned his 208th career victory on Friday night as Solano beat host Contra Costa 71-51.
Shannon Rankin scored 18 points and added four rebounds and three assists to lead the Falcons, who led 31-30 at the half. Solano bolted out of the gates in the second half and took a 42-32 lead. The Comets cut the lead to four with 13 minutes, 31 seconds to go, but that was the closest they got as the Falcons seemingly couldn’t miss a field goal in the second half.
Solano built a 21-point advantage and held the Comets scoreless over the final three minutes of the game.
“Our defense was outstanding the entire game, but the girls stepped it up a notch in the second half,” said Coach Matt, who was humble in victory. “I am extremely proud to hold this record. We have had a lot of success at Solano in the last ten years and it’s because of the great players we have had here. They deserve as much credit as I do.”
Ivy Jones had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Falcons, who improved to 12-9 overall and 7-0 in Bay Valley Conference games. Destinee Sinegal added 11 points.
Solano takes on Laney College, which is first place in the BVC Bay Division at 8-0, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m at Solano.
