Sinegal, Jones lead Falcons to victory

December 29, 2010

Sophomores Destinee Sinegal and Ivy Jones combined to score 52 points to lead the Solano women’s basketball team to a 91-80 win over Mission College in the first round of the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic on Tuesday.

Destinee scored 27 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. She also hit 5 of 7 from the 3-point line to tie the program record for best 3-point percentage in a single game (.714). Ivy scored 25 points, while dishing out nine assists and adding five rebounds and four steals.

Solano (5-7) recorded its first win streak of the season after downing Cosumnes River College before Christmas. The Falcons take on Ohlone College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the tournament’s semifinals.

Carmen Belser came off the bench and contributed 12 points and six rebounds while Shannon Rankin added 10 points, 6 rebounds and three assists.

Solano was impressive in building a 48-33 halftime lead. The Falcons were able to break Mission’s press and score easy baskets in transition. The team also shot the ball extremely well in the halfcourt offense, led by Destinee.

Solano extended the lead to 16 on a Ruby Leon 3-pointer early in the second half. But Mission didn’t go away and threw several presses at the Falcons to cause turnovers and create easy baskets for themselves.

Solano never allowed the Saints to get closer than five the rest of the way as it held on for the thrilling opening-round victory.

Los Medanos upends Solano at Showdown

December 12, 2010

All good sreaks must come to an end.

The Solano Community College women’s basketball team entered Sunday’s consolation championship of the Solano Showdown against Los Medanos College having never lost to the Mustangs in the history of the two teams’ meetings. The Bay Valley Conference rivals have faced off 34 times with the Falcons having won every contest.

That streak came to an end on Sunday with Los Medanos beating Solano 60-46.

Solano jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead before Los Medanos closed out the half strong to take a 30-23 lead into the break. Los Medanos scored the first four points of the second half to extend its lead but there was plenty of fight left in the Falcons.

Solano cut the lead to two, 37-35, with 14 minutes to go but struggled to find the bottom of the net and scored just 11 points the rest of the way.

Destinee Sinegal scored 14 points and added 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Ivy Jones chipped in 13 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists.

Solano fell to 3-7 on the season and travels to Elk Grove on Thursday to take on Cosumnes River at 6 p.m.
