Solano tops Siskiyous in NorCal semis

February 28, 2010

The Solano women's basketball team was all smiles on Saturday night.

Crystal Lee scored 20 points and added 13 rebounds as the Solano women’s basketball team beat College of Siskiyous in front of a raucous crowd in the Northern California Regional Semifinals on Saturday 69-54.

Solano advances to the Regional final where it will take on Santa Rosa Junior College next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Santa Rosa.

The playoff win was the first for the Falcons since 2002.

Crystal, a third team all-state selection, also had three steals and an assist and shot 9 of 15 from the field. Bree Domingo added 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Sophomore Bree Domingo led the Falcons into the NorCal Regional Finals.

The Falcons (24-5) shot the ball extremely well from the field against Siskiyous’ tough zone defense and brought stifling defensive pressure of their own on the other end of the court.

“Our defense was critical in us winning the game tonight,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “The ladies really got after it on defense, made some great stops and converted on offense.”

Siskiyous had several dozen fans in attendance, including the Eagles’ softball team, which was scheduled to play Solano’s softball team on Sunday. The crowd was very active throughout the game, making for a great playoff atmosphere.

Solano held a narrow five-point advantage at the half but stretched it to 10 several times in the second half. The Falcons’ athleticism showed as they were able to pull away late in the game. Bree Domingo hit a shot to give Solano an 11-point lead with just less than 7 minutes to go in the contest. Solano forced Siskiyous into several turnovers and the Eagles had to foul early to get into the bonus.

The Falcons hit their free throws down the stretch.

“Despite some turnovers, I thought we played really well tonight,” said Coach Matt. “Hopefully we can carry this over to the Santa Rosa game. It doesn’t get easier, though, that’s for sure.”

Lee named third team all-state

February 22, 2010

Solano's Crystal Lee earned another postseason honor on Monday.

Solano sophomore forward Crystal Lee was named third team all-state on Monday. She is the second player in Solano history to be named third team all-state. The first was Angela Franklin in 2007-08.

“This is a great honor for Crystal,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “Crystal worked very hard this year to get back into shape after being away from the game for so long. She is very deserving of this.”

Crystal and the Falcons will be back in action when they open the NorCal playoffs on Saturday against College of Siskiyous at 7 p.m.

Falcons honored by conference coaches

February 20, 2010

One day after helping Solano capture its third straight Bay Valley Conference championship, several Falcons were honored.

Sophomore Crystal Lee

Sophomores Crystal Lee, Veronica Morris and Ashley Daniels were named all-BVC on Saturday while head coach Matt Borchert was named co-coach of the year. Soroya Blunt, Bree Domingo, Allie Davison and Ashley were also named academic all-conference.

Crystal, who was a nominee for conference player of the year, averaged 11.4 points per game during the regular season. The forward, who was named all-conference as a freshman at Napa Valley College in 2004, also averaged 7.2 rebounds per game and shot 48 percent from the field.

Veronica, a guard who transferred to Solano from Santa Rosa Junior College, averaged 11.1 points per game. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest.

Sophomore Veronica Morris

Sophomore Ashley Daniels

Ashley Daniels, who had an outstanding freshman year at Solano and was one of the Falcons’ most consistent players this year, averaged 8.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She was one of the team’s top defenders.

All-conference selections are based on an individual’s performance throughout the entire season.

“I am really proud of the entire team,” said Coach Matt. “We won the conference title because we are a well-rounded team. Everyone contributed to this championship effort. These three ladies though stood out and I am glad that the other coaches recognize their effort and hard work on the court.”

For Coach Matt, this was his third time being named the conference’s top coach.

Congratulations to the entire team, and especially to Crystal, Veronica, Ashley, Soroya, Bree, Allie and Coach Matt for these outstanding achievements!

Solano tops Los Medanos, captures third straight BVC title

February 20, 2010

Veronica Morris scored 17 points to lead the Solano women’s basketball team to a 68-43 win over Los Medanos in Pittsburg on Friday to close out the Falcons’ regular season.

With the win, Solano tied Laney of Oakland for the conference title. It’s Solano’s third straight conference crown, fourth in the last five years and ninth in program history.

“Obviously, this is one of our goals – to win the conference title,” said Coach Matt Borchert. “These ladies showed they can handle a lot of adversity by bouncing back from that loss to Laney to close out the season and win a share of the title.”

Crystal Lee added 13 points, Ivy Jones had 11 and Jessica Woods added 10 for Solano, which improved to 23-5 and 15-1 in conference. The 23 wins ties for the most wins in the Matt Borchert-era and the 15 BVC wins are the most conference wins in school history.

Against Los Medanos, Solano only led 27-21 at half. The Falcons opened the second half with a 24-8 run and took a 51-29 lead with seven minutes remaining in the contest. Solano shot 66 percent from the field in the second half.

Ivy added three rebounds, six assists and four steals against LMC while Jessica had four rebounds and three blocked shots. Goli Tavassoli chipped in six points, five assists and four steals.

Solano will likely host a NorCal playoff game next Friday or Saturday. The playoff seedings will be announced on Monday.

Lee powers Solano past College of Marin

February 18, 2010

Solano's seven sophomores were honored prior to the game on Wednesday.

Crystal Lee scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Solano women’s basketball team to a 78-63 win over College of Marin on Sophomore Night Wednesday.

Prior to the game, Solano’s coaching staff honored seven sophomores in what was their final regular season home game at Solano Gym. Each sophomore took the court in the pre-game ceremony with their families and their favorite teacher – a new tradition this year.

“The faculty and staff at Solano play an important role in our student-athletes’ lives and we wanted to recognize them before the game tonight,” said Coach Matt Borchert.

Solano’s sophomores – Goli Tavassoli, Bree Domingo, Allie Davison, Ashley Daniels, Soroya Blunt, Veronica Morris and Crystal Lee – all played a big role in the success of the program this year and were presented with flowers by the coaching staff.

The Solano (22-5, 13-1) coaching staff also recognized Marin’s lone sophomore, who was playing in her final game for the Mariners.

Emotions – and an eight-day layoff from games – may have gotten the best of Solano as the Falcons struggled out of the gates early. The game was close until a late first-half run, sparked by freshman point guard Ivy Jones, put the game out reach.

Marin closed the gap to nine twice in the second half but Solano was able to pull away once again and seal its fifth straight win.

Crystal added 12 rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot. Soroya and Ivy each scored 11 points with Soroya added nine rebounds and three assists. Ivy chipped in three rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Falcons close out the regular season at Los Medanos of Pittsburg on Friday at 5:30 p.m. A win would secure Solano’s third straight Bay Valley Conference title.

Conference seedings will be determined next Monday.
