Laney stuns Solano at buzzer

Solano guard Veronica Morris walks off the court after the Falcons lost to Laney on Wednesday night at the buzzer.

The Solano College women’s basketball team’s 15-game win streak came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night when Laney College scored on a putback at the buzzer to post a 58-56 win in Bay Valley Conference action in Fairfield.

The Falcons (17-5, 9-1) tied the game at 56 on a Soroya Blunt baseline jumper with just under a minute to play. As Laney was bringing the ball up the court, Solano got a steal but came up empty on the possession. Laney recovered the ball with about 35 seconds to go on the clock and immediately was called for a travel after inbounding the ball.

Solano took over and ran offense, looking for an open shot but turned the ball over with about nine seconds to go in the game. Laney’s point guard rushed down the court and put up a shot which bounced high off the rim. Laney’s leading scorer got the rebound and tossed it back in while still in the air just as time expired.

“This was a very tough way to lose,” said Coach Matt Borchert. “We struggled all night on the defensive boards. Laney is very athletic and they just found a way to get to the ball on the offensive glass.”

Solano trailed by as many as 12 in the first half but went on a 16-8 run to close out the first half and cut the lead to four at halftime. Laney led by as many as eight in the second half in what was a thrilling contest for all in attendance.

“We had great crowd support tonight,” said Coach Matt. “Our fans were in the game from the tip to the buzzer. It was a great college basketball environment. If you weren’t at the game tonight, you missed a good one!”

Crystal Lee led Solano with 16 points and 14 rebounds. She also had two assists, four steals and a blocked shot. Soroya Blunt had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Solano struggled shooting from the field, especially from the 3-point line where they only connected on 1 of 9.

Solano and Laney are now tied atop the Bay Valley Conference standings with six games left to go in the regular season.

“This loss doesn’t take anything away from this team though. Winning 15 straight is an amazing accomplishment. We will get back to work and be ready for Mendocino on Friday,” said Coach Matt.

Solano, the No. 3-ranked team in the North and No.16 in the state, hosts Mendocino on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

I was moved by the reception the team got as they walked off the court with their heads held high last night. They received a standing ovation from the crowd and lots of fans were yelling “Go Falcons! Great game, ladies!” The season is far from over, and this team has already accomplished so much, but the fan support is outstanding for this team. What a great community we live in. Being a student-athlete at Solano is awesome!
