The Solano women’s basketball team upset the North’s top-ranked team en route to winning the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic on Wednesday, beating City College of San Francisco 64-57.
Sophomore Ashley Daniels was named the tournament MVP while Crystal Lee and Bree Domingo were all-tournament selections. Lee scored 22 points and added nine rebounds against CCSF, the fourth-ranked team in the state.
The Falcons led by as many as 14 points during the game before City College cut into the lead in the second half. Solano was able to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory. It was the first time Solano has won the Gervasoni tournament, formerly known as the De Anza Classic but renamed after the late De Anza coach in 2004.
Coach Matt Borchert was an assistant under Gervasoni for four years at De Anza. His assistant, George Molina, also served as an assistant to Gervasoni.
“This is a very emotional win for me and a great victory for our program,” said Coach Matt. “To beat a reputable program like San Francisco and win this tournament is awesome.”
Daniels had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals against City College. Soroya Blunt had 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks while fellow sophomore Bree Domingo added 12 points, three rebounds and six assists.
Solano has now won eight games in a row and improves to 10-4 overall. The Falcons conclude the preseason schedule with great momentum and resume Bay Valley Conference play on Jan. 6 against Mendocino in Ukiah.
