The Solano College women’s basketball team upended Cosumnes River College 78-68 on Sunday to win their own Solano Showdown. It was the first time since 2005 that the Falcons won the Showdown.
Solano (5-4) took a 31-27 lead into the half. Both teams battled back and forth in the second half but a Goli Tavassoli 3-pointer tied the game at 47. Solano took the lead shortly thereafter and never looked back. The Falcons used outstanding pressure defense to disrupt Cosumnes.
“I was real happy with the way the team played this weekend,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “Our defense was outstanding and we had some players step up on offense that helped out as well.”
Sophomore Veronica Morris was named tournament MVP after averaging 13.6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game. Freshman Destinee Sinegal had a great showing at the tournament as well, leading the team in scoring on the first two nights. She was named to the all-tournament team. Destinee averaged 13.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 steals.
Solano advanced to the championship game of the Showdown by defeating Siskiyous on Saturday night. Solano controlled the game and led by as many as 25 in the second half.
Solano returns to action on Friday when it opens defense of its back-to-back Bay Valley Conference titles. The Falcons travel to Oakland to play Laney at 6 p.m.
