Solano opened the 2009-10 season with an 83-72 victory over Santa Ana in the first round of the Santa Ana/Orange Coast Classic on Friday. Solano’s sophomores made a huge statement with six of the seven contributing on offense. The Falcons were tied with host Santa Ana at half but broke the game open in the second half with solid three-point shooting and tight defense. SCC (1-0) takes on Grossmont in the semifinals on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Crystal Lee had an impressive debut with the Falcons, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Soroya Blunt, a returning all-BVC player from a year ago, added 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Veronica Morris (12 points), Goli Tavassoli (10 points) and Ashley Daniels (10 points) all played big roles.
Sophomore Bree Domingo, who is attempting to break Solano’s all-time career assist record, had six assists in the victory.
“We were more disciplined in the second half and played a lot tighter defense in the second half,” said Solano coach Matt Borchert. “We had some really good sequences on defense in the second half that led to baskets. We also shot the ball real well.”
