It is official. This team has heart.
In the first half last night we struggled, but what was different than from previous rough times before, is the presence of an energy to the girls that led everybody in the gym to believe that we weren’t going to back down. We only hit 9-35 from the floor and trailed going into halftime, and yet everybody remained composed and confident.
It was the difference maker. In the preseason, when Coach Matt would get on the girls for mistakes, I would try to challenge them by asking, “What are you going to do about it now?” Earlier in the season they would fold, give up. But last night, instead of being down and accepting it, they evaluated why they were in that situation, made adjustments, and executed.
They did something about it.
What it takes to do that is heart, and the girls showed that they have it last night.
We now sit alone in second place, still one game back of Contra Costa. We need to win both of our games next week and for Contra Costa to lose again if we’re going to share the BVC title. Last night, Mendocino almost helped us out, but fell, 48-49.
We can only focus on what we need to do to prepare for next week, and I am now confident that the girls are going to be ready to do what it takes to make it happen.
