Three wins in a row…

January 13, 2009

Like expected, Napa came to play last night.  They consistently work their butts off, and last night was no different.  Our girls, however, were ready as well.  Soroya was a beast on the boards and hit some big shots for us, and Ashley Daniels was all over the place all night.

Once again, though, it was a team effort.  It’s a cool thing to be a part of, because all 10 of our players step on the floor and contribute.  They all understand what their rolls are now, have seemed to embrace those rolls, and want to use their strengths and be effective when they’re in the game.  Every single one of them did important things to help us win last night.

Game summary:

Solano won for the second time in a row on Friday night as they beat Merritt 79-67, bringing their BVC record to 2-2.  Leilanie Lewis was the standout leader on the floor, immediately setting the tone of intensity, leading the team statistically on the floor, and eventually helping put the nail in Merritt’s coffin with her four free throws in the last two minutes.  Overall, it was a team effort, however, as all ten Solano players scored and contributed in various ways.  The Falcons’ next matchup will be Monday, January 12th, at home against Napa Valley (5:30).

A step in the right direction…

January 8, 2009

We got our first conference win last night, and though it’s nice, it was really the process of how we got that “W” that makes me proud of the girls.

We weren’t perfect.  There were a couple of “What the?” plays, but they battled and they competed.  I could see them all put forth the extra effort to be more intense on the floor and on the bench.  When a player got knocked to the floor on a charge, someone was there to pick ’em up and congratulate them.  It still needs to be kicked up a notch, but it’s something that’s obviously not going to be fixed in one night.  Last night was a great step forward.

We’re now 1-2 in the BVC and will play our first away conference game this Friday against Merritt.

More links from Monday’s game…

January 7, 2009

Tonight we’re back on our home floor against Mendocino at 5:30.

Solano? 3-12?

January 6, 2009

As a program we’re in a place right now that we’re not used to.  Needless to say, it’s been hard to deal with.

Over the previous three seasons, we lost only a total of three conference games.  And yet this season, we’ve started conference going 0-2.  We’re now 3-12 on the season.  3-12!

As a coaching staff, we’re baffled.  We were so excited about the squad that we had put together for this season.  We had lost a good chunk of sophomores last year, but felt that we had loaded ourselves up with the talented freshman needed to be successful.  Looking at our record, you may think that we were nuts.

I don’t believe that.  I don’t think this squad lacks talent.  What they lack is the knowledge of what competitiveness and intensity are all about.  In the first half last night, when we’re struggling, Allie makes this incredible play.  The girl launches herself out of bounds to save a loose ball and is able to knock it off an opponent to give us possession.  It was beautiful.  I jump up and scream, only to look around me to see the 5 subs with their butts still on the bench, politely clapping.

It’s just crazy.

Where is the bench getting up and going nuts?  And where are her other four teammates on the floor, sprinting over to help Allie up, slap her on the butt, chest bump, scream in her face about how awesome her effort was, etc…

Laney outplayed us last night, and unfortunately, we really didn’t care either way.  It’s that, not the talent that needs to be fixed if we’re going to suck it up and make some noise in conference this year.

Sadly, I’ve only seen this team show that they have the guts to do that once this year, when they came back to win against Ohlone in the Gervasoni Memorial Tournament.  It almost seems like they just expect it to work out, like it’ll just happen if they wait it out.  I don’t know if they understand that they are the ones that need to act and make it happen.

Let’s hope they can prove me and everybody else who doubt them wrong and do something about their situation.
